Meal Etiquette
Meal Etiquette
In Mexico, there isn't as much stigma attached to being late as there is in some countries. In fact, arriving a bit late for places is a part of etiquette. Arriving early or on time is actually considered rude and inappropriate. Introductions are usually handled by the host if you are invited to a smaller gathering, but you may introduce yourself at a large party ("Mexico- Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette").
Dining Etiquette
When dining, only sit down when you are invited to and told where to sit. Another thing to be careful about is starting to eat after the host or hostess has. Starting before the host or hostess is not polite.
Also, make sure you keep your hands visible while eating and your wrists on the edge of the table. Toasts are only given by men and leaving a bit of food on your plate is polite ("Mexico- Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette") . If you're at a restaurant, it's customary to let the host order for you. If you are the host, you should order for your guests.
Another thing to remember is to not get up and go to the bathroom as soon as the meal is over, unless it is an emergency. Tipping is also important in Mexico, and if you are settling the bill, you must include a tip (unless the service was very unsatisfactory) ("Social Etiquette in Mexico") .
